Last Friday, 15 Grade 5/6 students worked with Ms Micallef, Ms Walsh and Melissa from Hume City Council to plant the school’s new Outdoor Sensory and Tranquillity Garden. The students worked happily all day to plant over 400 seedlings, all native wildflowers, shrubs, grasses and trees. Over the coming month chairs, pavers, a birdhouse, birdbath and table will be added to the garden so that all students will be able to enjoy the outdoor learning environment.
A huge thank you to Hume City Council for providing funding and support for the development of our school garden through the Schools for Nature project, with funding from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) under the Caring for Our Local Environment (COLE) Grant.
As well as a big thank you to Woolworths for our Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant which also funded the garden development. These grants are being funded with money made from the sale of the Woolworths recyclable Bag for good™ which was launched in 2018 when the supermarket stopped using single-use plastic bags.
Hume City Council also provided students with two native wildflower seedlings to take home and plant last Thursday and Friday. These seedlings need lots of sunlight and water for them to grow. We hope the students and families are enjoying the beautiful new additions to their home gardens. If any families would let to send through photos of their newly planted seedling to their classroom teacher, that would be wonderful!
